Catalytic Converter Theft - Crime Prevention Tips
We have been made aware that a number of catalytic converters have been stolen from cars in the early hours of the morning recently.
Catalytic converters are targeted because of the precious metals that they are made with, namely rhodium, platinum and palladium. Thieves simply cut the catalytic converter from the exhaust pipe of a parked car and sell them on to scrap metal dealers.
What types of vehicle are being targeted?
Taller vehicles are more vulnerable as the catalytic converters are easier to access.
Based on claims handled, the Honda Jazz, Toyota Prius, Toyota Auris and Lexus RX were the most likely cars to be targeted.
What can you do to prevent your vehicle from being targeted?
To reduce the risk of having your catalytic converter stolen you could
- Purchase anti-theft products such as Catloc - a Sold Secure approved product (find out more about Catloc's Secured by Design’s Police Preferred Specification) for more information visit https://www.securedbydesign.com/about-us/news/catloc-achieves-police-preferred-specification
- Park to restrict access to the underneath of the car
- Ask your dealer to weld the catalytic converter to the car
- Fit a tilt alarm
- Register your converter and mark it with a forensic marker, which will make it harder for thieves to dispose of your converter.
We would like to share some crime prevention tips with local residents on how to keep your car safe.
“There are steps motorists can take to try and reduce the chance of your vehicle being targeted by thieves. If you do notice any suspicious activity where individuals are pulling up next to cars and interfering with a vehicle we would ask you to get in touch with us.”
It can take a thief less than three minutes to remove a catalytic converter from its housing on the car exhaust pipe but there are a number of ways the public can protect their property.
Tips on how to protect your vehicle:
- Keep your vehicle in a garage if you can
- If you park it on a driveway, install motion activated lighting
- Otherwise, park in a well-lit, populated area
- Locks are also available that can be fitted to your converter
