Our News - August 2021

Welcome to this month's edition of our newsletter!

We hope you are all keeping well and you have enjoyed some of the nice weather we have had recently!

We are 1!

This month, we are celebrating one year as a "Neighbourhood Watch Scheme"

We set up the scheme in August last year due to an increase in anti social behaviour. Since then, our scheme has gone from strength to strength. The main reason for setting up the scheme was to reduce crime within our community. We share crime prevention tips across our social media pages and also send out alerts to over 120 members or our official scheme!

We have helped members of our community in so many ways since our scheme has formed. We have helped with advertising lost and found pets, set up our own street champion group. We have provided support to vulnerable members who live in our community by sign posting them to local organisations who can provide emergency food parcels. We have acted on behalf of residents who have been suffering from noise pollution and anti social behaviour.

We really do enjoy what we do! At times it hasn't been easy, but when we sit back and think of how many people we have helped and how we have helped them, it really is worth it!

We would also like to say thank you to the officers who work for Arleston & College Safer Neighbourhood Team for all of their support and guidance.

We would like to thank Angela McClements for all of her support since our scheme began. Angela really has been a fantastic support when we have needed guidance on how to deal with environmental issues within our community.

Our vision for the future

We would like to continue to raise more awareness of crime prevention to ensure the members of our community are kept safe. Our objectives in how we look to achieve this are as follows:

  • Reduce & prevent local crime and disorder.
  • Reduce fear of crime
  • Address issues relating to anti social behaviour
  • Create safer neighbourhoods
  • Build community spirit and cohesion
  • Reassure fellow members of our community
  • Continue to build upon relationships with our local police team, local councillor and local organisations
  • Assist in the detection and apprehension of criminals through members of the public providing information
  • Improve quality of life and the local environment
In working towards these objectives, we will continue to work with our fellow neighbours, our local police team, our local councillor, our local councillor and other organisations. Together, we can all make Arleston, a safer place to live!

If you haven't yet joined our scheme, you would be very welcome to do so. You can sign up via the link below

We look forward to you joining us

This month

This month, we will be meeting with Tracey Onslow who is the Deputy Police Crime Commissioner for West Mercia Police.

We will be asking Tracey for funding to secure a permanent CCTV camera within our community. We will also be approaching her about the possibility of another full time police officer for Arleston & College.

We will of course keep you informed of any updates from the meeting. We hope that we will be able to secure funding which will help to keep our community safe.

June Crime Stats

As you will see, there has been an increase in violence and sexual offences and shoplifting during June.

Also a very slight rise in theft and public order. This month, we will be raising more awareness about domestic violence. We really hope that the information will be useful.

Please ensure that you report any crime or suspicious activity to the Police by calling 101. In the event of an emergency, please call 999.

Reports can be made online to via the link below:

https://www.westmercia.police.uk/ro/report/ocr/af/how-to-report-a-crime/

Alternatively, please call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or report any instances of crime or suspicious activity online via www.crimestoppers-uk.org

Domestic Violence

What is domestic violence?

Domestic violence is violence committed by someone in the victim's domestic circle. This includes partners and ex-partners, immediate family members, other relatives and family friends. Domestic violence can take the form of physical, sexual or psychological abuse.

Lets talk about domestic violance

It's a horrible thing to go through, yet so very common among us all, people should not have to go through this, you are not alone, theres many indivduals thats have gone through domestic violence. In June in telford there was 41 cases of violence and sexual offences.

There is no excuse for domestic violence and you should never blame yourself because it is never your fault.

You never have to be alone in anything you are going through, please reach out for help when safe to do so, you can get through this, there are people to help you every step of the way.

Spotting the signs

Sometimes the signs that domestic abuse is happening in your neighbourhood will be quite evident - for example, you may hear arguments, violent noises, and sounds of distress coming from a property.

People may often make the mistake that these are signs of anti social behaviour. But it's not always this easy to spot, as domestic abuse is often a hidden crime. Abusers will threaten their victims to stop them from speaking out about their domestic abuse.

Perpetrators come from all walks of life, regardless of age, class, race or religion. They can present themselves in a calm and controlled way. However, people that experience it can change their behaviour in ways that are obvious and subtle.

What do you do if you are suffering from domestic abuse?

There are lots of help lines and services who can help which include

Police - 999 emergancey/ 101 non-emergancey
Refuges national domestic abuse helpline - 0808 2000 247
Online chat for women -  https://www.womensaid.org.uk/
Online chat for men - https://mensadviceline.org.uk/

All pubs and some shops have 'ask for anglea' which if you feel you need help they will find help for you and make sure you are safe.

What should you do if you suspect someone is suffering from domestic abuse?

If you believe that someone is in immediate danger, please call 999.

If you suspect someone you know is being abused in their relationship, there are a number of options open to you:

As a concerned neighbour or friend, you can report your concerns to the Police or an organisation who offer support for those who suffer from domestic violence. Please exercise caution when making an official report on the victims behalf, as it may not be safe. It can also be very disempowering for them and can result in consequences for the victim that you may not be able to forsee.

If possible, try talking to the victim about the abuse in a safe and confidential space. Signpost them to help and support.

If you are at all concerned about the safety or welfare of a child as a result of domestic abuse, you can get in touch with their school who can investigate safeguarding concerns. You could also report your concerns to NSPCC by calling their helpline on 0808 800 5000

We will be continuing to raise more awareness about domestic abuse during August. Please keep an eye on our social media accounts for more useful information.

Did you know?!

During the month of July, our stteet champions collected over 30 bags of rubbish from our streets!

That's a lot of rubbish that had been disposed of incorrectly.

We would like to remind all residents to dispose of their litter in the correct manner. If you are out and about within our community, please dispose of any general waste in the bins that are located all around Arleston. Items such as plastic bottles and cans, can be disposed of in your recycling bin.

We would like to thank our street champions for all their hard work and dedication during the month of July.

If anyone would like to become a Street Champion, please visit this link
